You know your subject inside and out. So why is it sometimes difficult to explain it to someone who doesn’t?
Because you know too much.
When you're an expert, you see all the details, connections, exceptions and nuances. What seems like a simple question may have a very complicated answer.
But your audience may not need the whole answer. They need the right answer for them.
Before you start explaining, take a step back and ask:
What does my audience already know?
What do they actually need to understand?
What is most important for them to take away?
What can I leave out?
Then start with the big picture before getting into the details.
For example, instead of beginning with how something works, start with why it matters. Instead of explaining every step in a process, explain the outcome. Instead of using technical terminology, use language your audience uses.
And here's an important test:
If I had only 30 seconds to explain this, what would I say?
That answer often reveals the core of your message.
You don't have to simplify your expertise. You have to simplify how you communicate it.
At Applause, we help technical experts turn complex information into clear, focused messages that connect with their audiences. Through individual coaching and small group workshops, we help you clear the clutter and articulate your message.
