Your Audience Doesn’t Need to Know Everything You Know

Technical experts have a lot of knowledge—and when they present, it’s tempting to share it all.

More information feels helpful. But too much information can make it harder for your audience to understand what really matters.

Your job isn’t to share everything you know. Your job is to help your audience understand what they need to know.

Before you prepare your next presentation, ask yourself:

What does my audience already know? Don’t spend valuable time telling them what they already understand.

What do they need to know? Focus on the information that supports your purpose.

What do I want them to understand, decide, or do? Let that guide what you include.

What can I leave out? If a detail doesn’t support your message, consider moving it to backup material.

A useful test is to look at every major point in your presentation and ask:

“Why does my audience need to know this?”

If you can’t answer that question, you may not need the information.

Remember: Your expertise is valuable. That’s why you are the one presenting it. Your ability to determine what your audience needs from that expertise is what makes you an effective presenter.
